Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Sunday that the swelling in Suarez's hand has improved significantly, and the left-hander could pick up a ball in the next day or two, Matt Gelb of The Athleticreports. The 28-year-old was struck in the left hand by a comebacker during Saturday's start against the Cardinals, but he's had X-rays come back negative and already appears to be progressing in his recovery. It remains to be seen if Suarez will be cleared for his next turn through the rotation, but he's certainly trending in the right direction. The Phillies also have three scheduled days off surrounding next weekend's two-game series versus the Mets in London, so the club could give Suarez some extra time between outings without needing an additional starter.... Phillies' Ranger Suarez: X-rays clean, unsure for next start
Suarez's (hand) X-rays came back negative Saturday but there's swelling in his left thumb and it's unclear if he'll be able to make his next scheduled start, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Fantasy managers can take a deep breath knowing that Suarez avoided significant injury after being hit by a comebacker during his start Saturday. While it's uncertain at this point if Suarez will recover in time for his next start -- which is tentatively scheduled for June 8 -- the 29-year-old is expected to avoid the injured list after Saturday's scare. He's been one of the best pitchers in baseball this season, boasting a 9-1 record with a 1.70 ERA across 74.0 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Hit by comebacker
Suarez was removed from Saturday's game against the Cardinals with a left hand contusion after being struck by a 106.1 MPH comebacker in the second inning, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Suarez didn't allow a baserunner and struck out two hitters over two innings. Early reports indicate that Suarez is only dealing with a bruised throwing hand after being hit by a comebacker off the bat of Alec Burleson. After Suarez's two perfect innings, Jose Ruiz will take over on the mound. The Phillies will likely continue to evaluate Suarez throughout the evening to ensure that the injury is merely a contusion and nothing long term. Thankfully for Suarez managers, the Phillies have back-to-back days off next week and the ace's next start is scheduled for June 8.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Handed first loss
Suarez (9-1) yielded five runs (four earned) on three hits and four walks over six innings Sunday, striking out nine and taking a loss against the Rockies. Colorado pounced on Suarez early, plating two runs in the first inning and another three in the second. He was able to settle in for four shutout frames to finish the start, but the damage was already done. It was the first time this season he's issued more than two walks or allowed more than three runs. On a more positive note, Suarez generated a season-high 19 whiffs and improved his K:BB to 77:16 through 72 frames. He'll carry a 1.75 ERA into his next matchup, which is lined up to be at home against the Cardinals.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Improves to 9-0
Suarez (9-0) earned the win Tuesday over the Rangers, allowing one run on five hits and two walks while striking out 10 over seven innings. Suarez was stellar again Tuesday, holding Texas to a lone run on a Marcus Semien double in the third inning while recording a season-high 10 strikeouts. The 28-year-old southpaw has been a revelation for the Phillies this season -- his ERA is down to a sparkling 1.36 with a 0.79 WHIP and 49:9 K:BB and he boasts an MLB-high nine wins across 10 starts (66 innings). Suarez will look to keep rolling in his next outing, currently scheduled for this weekend in Colorado.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Continues dominant run
Suarez (7-0) allowed three hits and two walks over seven shutout frames Friday, striking out nine while earning a win over the Marlins. It was another terrific outing for Suarez, who took advantage of a soft matchup against Miami by turning in his fourth scoreless outing of the year. He punched out a season-high nine batters and let only two Marlins get into scoring position. Suarez has tossed seven consecutive quality starts, earning a win in each. He lowered his ERA to 1.50 with a 55:8 K:BB through 54 frames. Suarez is currently in line for a home matchup with the Mets next week.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Posts quality start Saturday
Suarez (6-0) collected the win Saturday versus the Giants, permitting three runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out six. There was a rain delay before the game and more inclement weather during the contest, but Suarez seemed undaunted as he became the first six-game winner in baseball (Tyler Glasnow joined him later Saturday). It speaks to how well Suarez has pitched this season that this was easily his worst start since his first outing of the season when he allowed three runs in five innings. The three runs the left-hander gave up Saturday matched his total from his previous five starts. With a matchup versus the Marlins looming next week, Suarez has a good chance to keep rolling.... Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Improves to 5-0 Saturday
Suarez (5-0) earned the victory over San Diego on Saturday, allowing one run on three hits and no walks while striking out eight batters over eight innings. Suarez's scoreless inning streak came to an end at 32.2 frames when Eguy Rosario touched him up for a solo homer in the eighth inning, but that did little to take away from another dominant effort. The left-hander posted his fifth straight quality start, and he's struck out exactly eight batters in three of those outings. Suarez has been among the league's best pitchers in the early part of the season -- he's tied for the MLB lead with five wins, leads all qualified pitchers with a minuscule 0.63 WHIP and ranks fourth with a 1.32 ERA.... Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Extends scoreless streak in win
Suarez (4-0) earned the victory Monday, allowing two hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings against the Reds. He struck out five. Suarez rang up nothing but zeroes for the third consecutive start, allowing only two singles and a walk in a dominating performance against the Reds. The Phillies' southpaw earned his league-leading fourth win while extending his scoreless inning streak to 25.1 innings. The outing dropped his ERA to 1.36 with a 0.70 WHIP through 33 innings with 32 strikeouts against just five bases on balls. Next up for Suarez is a road matchup, tentatively scheduled to take place this weekend in San Diego against the Padres.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Goes distance vs. Rockies
Suarez improved to 3-0 on the season in Tuesday's 5-0 win over Colorado, allowing seven hits and one walk while striking out eight over nine scoreless innings. Suarez was stellar Tuesday, holding the Rockies without an extra-base hit en route to a complete-game shutout, his first since 2021. After taking a no-decision against Atlanta to start the year, Suarez has won his subsequent three starts, and he hasn't allowed a run in consecutive outings while logging 16 strikeouts over 15 innings in that span. Overall, the left-hander sports a 1.73 ERA with a 0.77 WHIP and 27:4 K:BB through 26 innings this season. Suarez will look to keep rolling in his next start, tentatively lined up for early next week in Cincinnati.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Fans eight over six scoreless
Suarez (2-0) earned the win over Pittsburgh on Thursday, tossing six scoreless innings during which he allowed two hits and two walks while striking out eight batters. Suarez didn't allow any extra-base hits in the dominant outing, and the Pirates didn't get any runners to third base against him. The southpaw racked up a season-high eight punchouts and recorded his second straight quality start. Suarez has been great through three appearances this season, posting a 2.65 ERA, 0.71 WHIP and 19 strikeouts over 17 innings. It's a small sample size, but it's promising that he's also cut his walk rate significantly compared to last season, as he's walked just three batters over those 17 frames thus far.... See More ... Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Tallies seven strikeouts
Suarez did not factor into the decision Sunday against Atlanta, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk over five innings. He struck out seven. Suarez faced a daunting task in opening his season against an Atlanta lineup that was best in the league last year against left-handed pitching (131 wRC+). He held his own and punched out seven Atlanta batters despite allowing a two-run homer to Ozzie Albies in the first inning. Suarez faces a much more manageable lineup in his next start, scheduled to be against the Nationals on the road.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Settles at $5.05 million
The Phillies and Suarez avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $5.05 million contract Thursday, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Suarez gets a raise in what was his second year of arbitration eligibility. The left-hander posted a 4.18 ERA and 119:48 K:BB across 125 innings covering 22 starts for Philadelphia in 2023. He'll be relied upon heavily by Philly again in 2024... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Tagged for three runs in loss
Suarez allowed three runs on six hits across 4.2 innings to take the loss in Tuesday's 4-2 defeat to the Diamondbacks in Game 7 of the NLCS. He struck out six. Suarez's luck finally ran out, as he allowed three runs in a postseason outing for the first time in nine career playoff games. The majority of the damage came in the fifth inning, when Corbin Carroll knocked in an RBI single. Jeff Hoffman then replaced Suarez and allowed Carroll to score, which left Suarez with an additional run and stuck him in line for the loss. Suarez's postseason concludes with a sterling 1.93 ERA and 0.80 WHIP with 19 strikeouts across 18.2 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Punches out seven in no-decision
Suarez did not factor into the decision in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Diamondbacks in Game 3 of the NLCS, allowing three hits and one walk across 5.1 innings. He struck out seven. Suarez reached a career-high strikeouts with his seven punchies as he kept his playoff success rolling Thursday. The southpaw had his command on point, as evidenced by a 39 percent called strikes+whiffs rate across all pitches, markedly higher than his 28.3 percent value he averaged across 125 regular-season innings. Suarez has allowed only one run so far this postseason, where he has pitched to a clean 0.64 ERA and 0.64 WHIP with 13 strikeouts across 14 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Cedes one run in win
Suarez earned the win in Thursday's 3-1 victory over Atlanta in Game 4 of the NLDS, allowing one run on three hits across five innings. He struck out two. Suarez had a solid start keeping runners off the basepaths, and while he by no means dominated, he kept the Atlanta offense at bay to hand the ball off with a lead. His only blemish came on a changeup that Austin Riley took deep from outside below the zone in the fourth inning. Suarez now has a sterling 1.04 ERA and 0.58 WHIP with six strikeouts across 8.2 innings this postseason. The southpaw will tentatively line up to take the mound again next week against the Diamondbacks in the NLCS.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Starting Game 4
Suarez will start against Atlanta in Game 4 of the NLDS on Thursday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Suarez had a strong outing during Game 1 of the NLDS, throwing 3.2 scoreless frames while striking out four batters en route to a Philadelphia victory. Atlanta's lineup developed a reputation for crushing left-handed pitchers in the regular season; however, the team has gotten off to a slow start in the postseason, and Suarez could be able to once again capitalize on Atlanta's collective slump.... Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Penciled in for Game 1
Manager Rob Thomson said Friday that Suarez will start Game 1 of the Phillies' NLDS matchup against Atlanta on Saturday, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Suarez's services weren't needed during the Phillies' two-game sweep over Miami in the NL Wild Card Series, so he'll be making his first appearance of the postseason on plenty of rest. The 28-year-old lefty posted a 4.18 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 22 starts during the regular season, but he surrendered 10 runs over 11.1 frames across his last two outings and will be facing an Atlanta offense that boasts an incredible .845 OPS -- a mark that rise to .870 against southpaws.... Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Struggles vs. Pirates
Suarez did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing six runs on nine hits and two walks over 4.2 innings against the Pirates. He struck out four. The Pirates got off to a fast start against Suarez, scoring three runs in the first inning. The left-hander has allowed 10 runs over 11.1 innings in his final two outings, a rough finish to an otherwise solid campaign. Suarez will end the regular season with a 4-6 record, 4.18 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 119 strikeouts across 22 starts (125 innings).... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Logs quality start in victory
Suarez (3-6) earned the win over St. Louis on Saturday, allowing one run on four hits and four walks while striking out five batters over six innings. Suarez had shaky control in the outing, throwing just 63 of 106 pitches for strikes and tying a season high with four walks. However, he was able to mostly navigate around trouble, leaving the bases loaded in the third inning before retiring 10 of the final 12 batters he faced. This was Suarez's first win in three starts since returning from a hamstring injury Sept. 1, and he's posted a 3.31 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 20:9 K:BB over 16.1 innings during that stretch.... See More ...
