Player Outlook
Jacob Young played in 33 games down the stretch after making his MLB debut for the Nationals in late August, and he had a .252/.322/.336 slash line with no homers, 13 steals, 12 RBI and nine runs in 121 plate appearances. It was a solid showing for the 2021 seventh-round pick, especially since he entered the season having never played above Single-A. He split most of the minor-league campaign between the High-A and Double-A levels, and overall he hit .305 with six home runs and 39 steals in 112 contests. The speed and contact skills (18.2 percent strikeout rate) were apparent in his first taste of the majors, as was his limited power. Young will likely need a strong showing during spring training to have a chance of making Washington's Opening Day roster in 2024, and even then he could still begin the campaign at Triple-A Rochester given he basically skipped the affiliate last year.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Exits with trainer

Young was removed from Saturday's game against the Guardians with an undisclosed injury, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. A trainer tended to Young while the Nationals made a pitching change in the bottom of the sixth inning before walking Young off the field. Eddie Rosario will fill center field while Joey Gallo enters the game in left. It's unclear exactly what type of injury Young is dealing with, but we should learn more later Saturday.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Steals 17th bag

Young went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base in Thursday's win over Atlanta. The 24-year-old center fielder has heated up again, batting .345 (10-for-29) over the last 10 games. Young remains limited as a fantasy asset -- he has yet to hit a homer this year and has a 4.5 percent walk rate -- but he tends to take full advantage when he does get on base. He's slashing .279/.338/.329 through 46 big-league games with 17 steals in 20 attempts, plus 14 RBI and 25 runs.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Collects three hits, stolen base

Young went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and one RBI in Monday's 8-4 victory over Atlanta. Young hit three singles and added his 12th RBI of the season in the sixth inning. Most importantly to fantasy owners, the Washington center fielder swiped his 16th base, moving him into a tie for fourth place in the majors. Overall, Young sports a .275/.329/.328 slash line in 146 plate appearances with 23 runs scored. He should continue to play full time despite Lane Thomas (knee) returning Monday, as the Nationals designated Victor Robles for assignment to open a roster spot for Thomas.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Resting Sunday

Young is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against Seattle, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Young will get a break after starting the last seven games at center field while going 6-for-23 with three RBI. With Young and Jesse Winker (quadricep) on the bench, Ildemaro Vargas, Victor Robles and Eddie Rosario will form the Washington outfield from left to right.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Nabs 15th steal

Young went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base in Monday's win over the Twins. The 24-year-old center fielder's ability to flip the lineup over from the bottom of the order was a key part of the Nationals' 12-run eruption Monday. Young has hit safely in five straight games and is up to 15 steals in 17 attempts on the season, but his overall numbers have sagged in May -- he's slashing .208/.304/.271 through 56 plate appearances.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Not in Friday's lineup

Young is absent from the lineup for Friday's game in Philadelphia. Young had started eight of the last nine contests, including six of them from the leadoff spot. He'll get a breather Friday though, as Victor Robles patrols center field for the Nationals.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Pilfers 14th bag

Young went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Wednesday's loss to the White Sox. Getting another start in the leadoff spot, Young swiped his 14th bag of the season, tying him for fifth in the majors behind Elly De La Cruz (26), Jose Caballero (17), Brice Turang (16) and Bobby Witt (15). Young only has two successful steals through 12 games in May though, as his issues getting on base consistently are catching up to him -- he's slashing only .167/.295/.222 on the month. The Nationals have been shut out in back-to-back games and sit in the bottom six in runs scored and team OPS on the season, and unless Young heats up at the plate, his time at the top of the order is likely about to end.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Available off bench Saturday

Young (back) is not starting in Saturday's game against the Blue Jays but is available to pinch hit or run, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Young was removed in the fifth inning of Friday's 9-3 win over the Blue Jays due to back spasms, and he was replaced by Jesse Winker. Alex Call will start in center field Saturday and hit eighth against Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Takes seat Wednesday

Young is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers. Young produced three hits over the Nationals' last two games to lift his season average up to .267, but he still looks to be stuck in a part-time role in center field. He and Eddie Rosario have now drawn three starts apiece at the position over a stretch of six games.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Nabs fifth steal

Young went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base in Sunday's loss to the A's. Hitting leadoff against southpaw Alex Wood with CJ Abrams bumped down the two-hole, Young remained hot as he produced his third multi-hit game in his last four starts. While the Nationals have seen a lot of left-handed pitching lately, Young has also drawn into the lineup against righties and appears to be seizing the starting job in center field. Since his early April promotion, the 24-year-old is batting .250 (7-for-28) with two doubles, two RBI, five runs and five steals (on five attempts) in nine contests.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Swipes three bags Tuesday

Young went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three stolen bases in Tuesday's win over the Giants. Making his fourth straight start in center field, the 24-year-old shifted down the ninth spot in the batting order with CJ Abrams returning from a finger injury to reclaim the leadoff spot, but Young still had a huge night on the basepaths. He's gone just 3-for-18 (.167) at the plate since his promotion, but a 4-for-4 performance on steal attempts is landing him on the fantasy radar. Young was successful on 52 of 59 attempts across all levels last season, so he's capable of making an impact in that category if he gets regular playing time. The Nats have faced four straight left-handed starters, however, so it remains to be seen if manager Dave Martinez will give him consistent looks against righties as well.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Headed to majors

The Nationals will recall Young from Triple-A Rochester prior to Thursday's game versus the Pirates, Grant Paulsen of MLB Network Radio reports. Victor Robles (hamstring) is headed to the injured list, and Young will be his replacement. Young is a candidate to slide right into Robles' vacated role as the right-handed option of a platoon in center field with Eddie Rosario. The 24-year-old stole 13 bases without being caught in 33 games with the Nationals in 2023, but he might not play enough to help out fantasy managers in the steals category in the immediate future.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Sent down to minors

The Nationals optioned Young to Triple-A Rochester on Saturday. Young entered spring training with a shot at the center field job, but Victor Robles has held him off and the Nats also plan to use Eddie Rosario some at the position. The 24-year-old should get regular reps in center field with Rochester.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: In mix for center field gig

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Wednesday that Young is competing with Victor Robles for the center field job, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Martinez acknowledged that Robles will enter spring training with an advantage, but the manager was impressed with Young down the stretch last season. Young slashed just .252/.322/.336 in 33 games with the Nationals but went 13-for-13 in stolen base attempts after swiping 39 bags over three levels in the minors. Martinez also noted that Young would get work at all three outfield positions this spring, so a bench role might end up being a better fit for him if he wins a spot on the 26-man roster. Even that isn't guaranteed though, as he played only four games at Triple-A in 2023 during a rapid ascent through the Nationals' system that saw him begin last season at High-A.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Swipes two bags Friday

Young went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases in Friday's 10-6 win over Atlanta. He swiped his ninth and 10th bags of the season, the first coming after he beat out a potential double-play grounder in the third inning. Young raced through three levels of the minors this season before making his big-league debut and went 49-for-56 on the basepaths across all his stops, but his lack of power (just six homers in 143 games) and a .242/.312/.333 slash line through his first 112 plate appearances in the majors makes it unclear whether he'll be in the line for a starting role with the Nats in 2024.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Two hits and a steal in loss

Young went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two stolen bases in Sunday's loss to the Dodgers. Young continues to impress since being called up Aug. 26. The 23-year-old has recorded a hit in 11 straight games and has multiple hits in three of his last five. He's been batting leadoff against lefties and is now a perfect 4-of-4 in stolen base attempts. Young should continue to see a near everyday role down the final stretch of the season with the Nationals having nothing to play for.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Thrives in leadoff spot

Young went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, two runs scored and an RBI in Tuesday's 11-5 loss to the Mets. With Lane Thomas (back) sidelined and lefty Jose Quintana on the mound for New York, Young got his first career start as the leadoff hitter and made the most of his opportunity. CJ Abrams will continue to hit atop the order against righties, but Young could become an intriguing DFS option if he keeps this assignment against future southpaws. The 24-year-old rookie has hit safely in seven straight games, batting .333 (8-for-24) over that stretch with three doubles, three runs, three RBI and two steals.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Nabs first big-league steal

Young went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Blue Jays. The 24-year-old has started three straight games in center field as the rebuilding Nationals look to the future, and Young collected his first hit and first steal in the majors in the seventh inning. His speed is legit, as the 2021 seventh-round pick swiped 39 bases in 46 attempts across three levels of the minors this year before his promotion to the big-league roster over the weekend, so Young could be a fantasy asset in that category down the stretch if he continues to see regular playing time.
